Rent a flat in Leicester - New developments at Leicester Museum

New Discoveries at Jewry Wall Museum

It's a great time to rent a flat in Leicester.  The latest development in our city is a new display highlighting some of the exciting new archaeology discovered in Leicester is set to open at the Jewry Wall Museum from this Saturday (July 17).

Opening in time for the first weekend of the National Festival of British Archaeology, the objects on display will include Leicester's Roman curse tablets. These lead tablets are inscribed with a curse against the perpetrators of theft, in one case a prized cloak and in the other a bag of silver coins. They give us a fascinating insight into the life of the residents of Ratae, Roman Leicester.

Principal Curator of Collections, Laura Hadland said: "This is intended to be a flexible display space. We've kept it very simple so that we can keep changing the objects that are on display. The most important thing is to give the public the opportunity to see all of the wonderful artefacts that were excavated in the city before the new Highcross shopping centre was built. I hope that everyone will enjoy the display, some of the objects are truly remarkable."

The display opens on Saturday 17 July to celebrate the Festival of British Archaeology. Visitors can pop along and see the exhibits from 11am until 4.30pm daily. There will also be special events at the museum every day during the Festival fortnight. For more details and specific times, visit: www.leicester.gov.uk/museums

Flat to rent in Leicester - Redevelopment in Leicester

The redevelopment of the Exchange at Eyres Monsell has moved a step closer.

Leicester City Council has signed a partnership agreement with the new owners of the Invincible pub site next to the Exchange – M F Strawson Ltd – who will submit a planning application for both sites in the next few weeks.

If the plans are approved, Strawsons will demolish the former Invincible public house, and in its place build a new shopping centre. This would provide a supermarket and five other shops. It would also include extra car parking.

The new shops would eventually replace those in the Exchange. And people living above the Exchange shops would also move so that the Exchange could be demolished.

This would leave a cleared site to be developed for new housing, for both rent and sale, when the market is right. The council would help Exchange residents to move.

Cllr Abdul Osman, Cabinet Lead for Regeneration and Transport said: “I’m pleased that, subject to planning approval, this project will bring new and modern facilities to the heart of Eyres Monsell. It is a good example of the council’s commitment to rejuvenate the city’s outer areas and shows our willingness to work with a variety of partners for the good of the city.”

The ward councillors for Eyres Monsell also expressed their delight.
Cllr Virginia Cleaver said: “This is good news for Eyres Monsell. The new shops would transform the appearance of Sturdee Road and bring modern facilities to local people.”

Cllr Rory Palmer thanked all who have worked on the project: “It has been a long road but we have persevered and now have a agreement which should deliver great benefits to the people of Eyres Monsell.”

Ben Sheppard, development consultant for Strawsons, said: “It is anticipated that a planning application will be submitted for the sites in the next couple of weeks. If this is approved, the development of the Invincible site should be able to commence, hopefully by the end of the year.” It's another example of why Leicester is such a great city to live and working.

Flats to Rent in Leicester - Riverside Improvements on their way

It's a great time to rent a flat in Leicester.  Funding has just been announced for new improvement to 2 areas of Leicester's riverside

The 2 areas, both just a short walk for many people renting a flat in Leicester with Jamie Lewis residential, are areas of open space in the city are due to transformed into parks and havens for wildlife thanks to a slice of Government funding.

Leicester City Council has successfully bid for £595,000 of New Growth Point Strategic Green Infrastructure (SGI) funding, which will enable wide-ranging improvements to be made to both the Rally Park and Abbey Meadows areas of the city.

The Rally Park project will redevelop the site, which is currently in poor condition, by making more of the green space available to visitors, planting more trees and clearing away overgrown vegetation to improve safety.

The part of the park facing onto the River Soar will also be opened up, with links to neighbouring communities improved.

At Abbey Meadows, works will focus on an area between the National Space Centre and Abbey Park Road, and includes encouraging wildlife with tree planting, creating reed beds in the river and landscaping.

Almost £100,000 has also already been secured from local developers towards the Rally Park scheme.

The projects will be the first city contributions towards implementing the River Soar and Grand Union Canal Strategy, which was approved last year and which include a series of measures to enhance the city's waterways.

Earlier this week, Leicester City Council's cabinet noted and approved the both projects, as well as agreeing to add the £595,000 New Growth Point SGI funding to the council's capital programme.

Leicester City Council's cabinet member for regeneration, Councillor Abdul Osman, said: "Both these projects are important steps towards enhancing the city's riverside area and making the most of the natural green spaces that the city has to offer.

"The funding will go a long way to helping regenerate Rally Park, which requires significant investment, and to bring new life to the Abbey Meadows area."

Funding agreements are due to be signed by the end of August 2010, subject to receipt of the funding from the Department for Communities and Local Government, with the projects due to be completed by December 2011.

Fosse Ward councillor and cabinet member for culture and leisure, Councillor Rob Wann added: “I’m delighted that this bid for New Growth Point money has been successful, and look forward to these improvements benefiting the community.”

What a great time to rent a flat in Leicester.  The Curve theatre has won an international award in recognition of its outstanding architecture.

The landmark building in Rutland Street, (just a short walk from where many people renting a flat in Leicester with Jamie Lewis residential live) was among winners of the prestigious 2010 International Architecture Awards, which celebrate the most significant new architecture designed and built worldwide.

In all, 95 winners from more than 38 countries were chosen, ranging from skyscrapers and sports stadiums to banks and bridges.

Curve was designed by award-winning Uruguayan architect Rafael Vinoly, and opened its doors to the public in 2008, and is a landmark building in the city's Cultural Quarter.

Leicester City Council's cabinet member for regeneration and transport, Councillor Abdul Osman, said: "Curve was designed and built to be an impressive new landmark building at the heart of the city's Cultural Quarter, and this award, which recognises the excellence of Curve's architecture, is great news for the city.

"These awards involved competition from hundreds of projects and designs across the world, so we are very pleased to have been selected as one of the winners, and delighted that Leicester is home to such an internationally-recognised building."

The curved, glass-clad theatre features two auditoria, one with 750 seats and another with 350 seats.

Movable steel walls separating the stage and the foyer can be lifted to make the stage is visible from street level, and Curve's glass cladding encloses an open plan foyer with views onto the café, bars, backstage area, and across the stage.

Leicester City Council's cabinet member for culture and leisure, Councillor Rob Wann, said: "This is a real feather in the cap for the Leicester and for Curve itself, and is very good news."

The awards were hosted by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design, and the European Centre of Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies, with a jury included leading architecture academics and critics.

Pat Weller, interim chief executive of Curve, added: "Curve is a theatre which the people of Leicester and Leicestershire can be proud of, and I am delighted that the building has been acknowledged with this international architectural award."

Top 20 tips for renting a flat in Leicester - by Jamie Lewis Residential

Looking to rent in Leicester? Most people rent at some point in their lives for various reasons. In the ideal world it should provide you with affordable, well maintained accommodation with the freedom of no mortgage or long term commitment. Unfortunately there are also some unscrupulous landlords / agencies out there – try using our handy top 20 tips for renting in Leicester to avoid any problems.

1. What do you really want and what can you afford?

Decide where you want to live
Work out how much you can afford to pay each month
Clearly define what sort of property you're looking for
Think about how long you’re hoping to rent for

2. When should I start looking?

The majority of property on the market to rent is available immediately or within the next couples of months. If you are looking for a property several months ahead you will generally struggle. Although this is different if you are looking for student accommodation. Many agents have waiting lists / mailing lists that you can join to keep track of new properties coming to market.

3. Where should I start?

Cast your net wide and check out the whole market from high street estate agents, to property management agencies and private landlords. This will give you a good understanding of what you get for your money in that area. Take your time to see if there is a shortage of the kind of properties you want to rent. Be willing to compromise.

Make sure if you deal with an agent they belong to a professional organisation such as ARLA, NALS, NAEA or RICS.

The internet is a great place to start with Gumtree, Find a property etc websites being a good place to start.

Try your local paper which will have an accommodation to let section.
